Dr Ribeiro is a benthic ecologist investigating the ecological and evolutionary processes that regulate marine community structure and dynamics. He has a particular interest in understanding anthropogenic impacts in the deep- sea, and informing policy and management. In this context, He has participated in large EU-funded projects investigating the ecological impacts of seabed mining on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the central Pacific Ocean (MIDAS, JPIO Mining Impact). He currently focuses most of his research on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge, which may be open for commercial mining in the near future. He also integrates the expert group working on a Strategic Environmental Assessment of seabed mining impacts in Norway. He has published a total of 36 scientific peer-reviewed papers, one book chapter and numerous reports. He has participated in 11 research cruises, one of them as chief scientist.
